How to prevent wild boars and hedgehogs from intruding into your garden: Building an Electric Fence.

How to prevent wild boars and hedgehogs from intruding into your garden?

Farmers or small private landowners engaged in land cultivation have experienced wildlife invasion threatening their crops (such as wild boar, hedgehogs, deer).

One of the most commonly used methods to deter animals from the land is the electric fence. In addition to preventing the intrusion of wildlife, it can also be used to protect and contain livestock within an area.

The electric fence works through current pulses generated by an energizer. Two separate connections originate from the energizer: one to the fence created by the conductor wire and another to the ground.

How to build an electric fence?

It is advisable to ground the electric fence with 3 galvanized stakes, placed 3 meters apart from each other.

When an animal touches the electrified fence, it will experience an electric shock lasting milliseconds. This will cause the animal to retreat.

How to prevent wild boars: what is needed to build an electric fence?

To build an electric fence, you need to have some essential components, including the energizer, the conductor wire, insulators, the grounding post, and other materials.

Gemi Elettronica is the Italian company that produces all the materials needed to make an electric fence.

The energizer is the device that generates electrical pulses to the fence. Choosing the right energizer is essential to have the correct current on the fence.

The first distinction is made based on the type of power supply, which can be:

  • 12 V battery (which can also be paired with a solar panel to recharge the battery);
  • 220 V mains power.

The various energizers from Gemi Elettronica can cover from 5 km to 8 km of real perimeter. With pulses generated from 10000 V to 15000 V depending on the chosen model.

How to deter wild boars: choosing the conductor wire

The choice of the conductor wire depends on the length of the fence and the animals for which the fence is made. Each wire has its own resistance and dispersal capacity, indicated in ohms / m. The value of ohms / m, closer to zero, the less current dispersion, so the fence will work better.

The conductor wire must pass inside the insulators, which are devices that fix and space the electrical wires from the stakes used to build the electric fence. The insulators vary according to the type of post they are applied to. The posts can be wooden or iron. So there are insulators with screws for wooden posts, and insulators for iron rods.

Gemi Elettronica can provide CE marked products, made in Italy guaranteeing maximum safety, both for humans and animals.
